Was reading the lyrics to a song, when i really struck out to me
"We have the obligation, to direct your train of thought
Showing what is prudent
Just fulfilling the mandate going along with trendy disputes
You prove our task
A worthy undertaking, funneling your fury
Greed and corruption, things that are below you
Open minded fairness
You think for yourself, pride and being reasonable
Masses echo truth
We declare the incompetent and describe their blunders
We pronounce the majestic shining light on the renown
We proclaim your heroes citing their humanity
We announce the villains and deduce why you loath them
Media slanted bias, can't be real this day
It must be coincidence
Why are some misguided?
Consider our sophistication, how is pop-culture with us?
Going against the grain, just a murky twist of fate
Ordering you to challenge authority, the one of our choosing
Demanding you to worship authority, the one of our choosing
No time to debate, anyone who is beneath us
Not in our refinement, more like neanderthal
Intellectual obscurity, disease of the vagrants
Not for us enlightened, the brains in the room
Everyone thinks like me
We must be our own sheep
Silence all our critics
Dissent can't have a place
Exile them underground
We're not taking sides, just promoting the logical
Why should our careers change what we believe
The goal of being objective endangers what we have faith in
We're the source of truth reporting what you need to know
The duty to guide the quest of knowledge
Framing facts to ascertain the proper conclusion
Helping the ignorant peasants of the populace
Steering simple minds to understand what to ponder
Blameless, on the right side
Influence, justified"
Shepherd's Commandment - Dying Fetus
If you haven't already realised, this song is about mass media influence on society. Yeah, we live in a ****ed up world. I think we could probably blame the media for screwing up the value system in our world today. Things like violence, casual sex, even things like smoking and drinking are being portrayed in a way that makes it all seem "okay" or that it even makes you "uncool" if you don't do it.
Have you ever wondered, why we dress the way we do, think the way we do, or even live the way we do? It's probably because of the media. The media is literally shaping our culture, and not in a very good way. It's almost like telling how they should live their lives. The media pretty much makes our decisions for us and sets our own our own personal preferences. From the day we were born, the way we should think is being imposed on us by the media. We see images on television and we will do anything to look like that favorite singer, or actor, or model. How people worship celebrities just sickens me.
The media creates the ideal image of a beautiful person and tells you what the characteristics of a successful person should be. Come on, it's all over tv and in the movies. Slimming ads, fashion magazines, etc etc.. It's just a subliminal way to tell you that if you are not like them you are not cool yet so its time to buy the stuff they buy and look like they look. Why should it be that our standards of beauty are imposed on us?
It's because of how the media has portrayed it, that people feel self conscious about appearance, their size, or their clothes. People get depressed cause they're not "good looking enough" by other's standards. It's because of the media that fat people are made fun of for being fat, it's because of the media that women are so obsessive with losing weight even when they are not obese. It's just ridiculous. How the media portrays things will become how society views them. People are expected to be by the standards of society’s norm.
The media has also screwed up the worlds music scene. Over promoted, over consumed mainstream music is what gets all the attention. But after all, it's all about money, right? These days, many bands aren't formed due to whatever musical inspiration. No, corporate giants search for people to form "boy bands" to earn them money. They don't write their own songs, or have much talents at all. They're just good looking, and over advertised. They just their record labels "puppets", if i may. While truely talented but not so good looking bands slog their asses of writing songs and performing, while not making that much money at all, these overrated boy bands go where their label wants them to, earning money for their label and enjoying all this undeserved fame. Have you ever heard a person go "OMG I LOVE THIS BAND THEIR LEAD SINGER IS SOOO HOT". It just sickens me. I've had a person tell me if their favourite singer turned fat they would stop listening to them. That's just sick. Music has lost it's meaning, pretty much thanks to the mainstream music industry.
Quoting yet another song, i couldn't have said it better myself. (Damn my lousy ability to express myself)
"The media is a tool designed to mold us into slaves
Drugging us into an empty, apathetic daze.
The trick is that we think that everything is going fine
But the truth to our reality lies buried in the mind
I don't give a fuck about the Hollywood elite;
I don't really care if models can't fucking eat.
I don't give a fuck about which movie is on top.
But what I really know is that the shit has got to stop.
Consumer appetites are never satisfied in full,
Cause the objects that they buy can simply never fill the void.
A constant need for meaning, and accumulating shit,
drives the lust in their obsession just to get another fix.
I don't give a fuck about the TV ratings game,
The Real World is not a party, just a place for the insane.
If that reflects reality, then pass another drink
You try to be a millionaire, I'll vomit in the sink.
What the fuck is left to try,
on an avaricious nation on an economic high?
If Rome could last 500 years,
who then will throw the wrench inside our gears?
The bottom line is money on the Western power scene,
where celebrities and porn can let the population dream.
They're pathetic human living in an advertising glut,
who devour with a passion what the mainstream vomits up"
So **** pop culture. I'm not gonna be another person that just eats up everything the media tries to feed me. No.
So wake up.
